Popcorn ceiling removal is a well-established renovation with a predictable process. Here's what happens from the time we show up to the time we leave.
Step 1: Protection
Before any scraping starts, we cover all flooring and furniture with plastic sheeting and seal off HVAC vents. Removing popcorn texture produces debris and we contain it as much as possible so cleanup is manageable.
Step 2: Wet Scraping
We apply water to the ceiling surface to soften the texture compound, then scrape it away in sections. On unpainted ceilings, moisture penetrates quickly and the texture comes off cleanly. On painted ceilings, we score the surface first to break the paint seal before soaking.
Step 3: Skim Coating
Once the texture is off, the bare drywall will show imperfections — tape lines, screw pops, and uneven areas that were previously hidden. Skim coating applies a thin layer of joint compound across the entire surface, which is then sanded smooth. This step is what produces a truly flat, modern-looking ceiling.
Step 4: Paint
After skim coat and sanding, the ceiling gets primed and painted. The result is a smooth, clean surface that looks completely different from what you started with — and makes the whole room feel larger and more up to date.
