Popcorn Ceiling Removal vs. Skim Coating

Two paths to a smooth ceiling — here's the difference.

You may have heard that you can skim coat over popcorn texture instead of removing it. Technically, this is possible — but it's not always the best approach.

Skim Coating Over Texture

Some contractors apply joint compound directly over popcorn texture to smooth it out. This avoids the mess of removal, but adds weight to the ceiling and the result is rarely as clean as true removal. The texture can telegraph through the skim coat, especially in raking light.

Remove First, Then Skim Coat

Our standard process is removal followed by skim coating. This gives you the best result: the texture is gone, the surface is level and smooth, and the paint finish looks clean from every angle.

Skim coating after removal is not optional — it's a necessary step to address the imperfections that become visible once the texture is scraped off.
